Anti Social Mobile Phone Use
Cell phone etiquette or when not to answer your cell phone!
Here in the developed west nearly everyone now has a moble phone. But it should be remembered that around half of the world’s population have never made or received a telephone call.
This fact highlights the technological gap that exists between the developing countries and those lucky enough to have affordable access to modern communication technology.
But many people think that mobile phones are actually more irritating than they are useful. Have you recently used a train or a bus?
On my routine journeys to and from London on the train I am forced to listen to various telephone conversations that would never have taken place if it wasn’t for mobile phones. On my homeward journey I regularly listen to people calling their partners just to tell them: ‘I’m on the train’. And I see and hear the same people making the same calls with the same pointless message every day. What did they do before they had a mobile phone?
I’m also often forced to listen to the conversations of teenagers who appear to speak a different language. Their conversations seem to be focused on their boring lives, the television programmes they’ve been watching or criticising their boyfriends. In one conversation that a young lady chose to share with the occupants of a packed commuter train she cheerfully derided a young man’s sexual prowess with grizzly attention to detail. As she proceeded to describe her experience in far too much detail everyone in the compartment was squirming with embarassment.
Being forced to listen to what should be private conversations is just one aspect of modern mobile phone use that is highly anti-social. Another is those incredibly irritating and often far too loud ringtones that are supposed to sound like a popular tune but don’t.
We all need to remember how lucky we are to even have mobile phones. People who use their mobile phones to describe their sex lives should be banned from owning them.
